The After: Rebuilding & Recreating After Profound Loss

A2Z Live! is an open-format, virtual Zoom gathering hosted by A2Z Healing Toolbox®.  This community forum is dedicated to helping people take proactive steps in the grief and trauma healing process by learning, sharing and discussing.  Participants will gather new tips, tools and resources from inspirational guest panelists in the fields of traumatic loss and bereavement – grief therapists, social workers, trauma experts, health and wellness coaches, spiritual leaders, and award-winning authors.

A2Z Live! is a 90 Minute Open Zoom Format facilitated by social worker-educator-author Susan Hannifin-MacNab. The gathering will run as follows:

  • 15 Minutes Welcome and Panelist Introductions 
  • 45 Minutes Panel Interview, Questions and Discussion
  • 25 Minutes Break-Out Room Conversation with Panelists and Participants
  • 5 Minutes Closing 

As a participant on A2Z Live! you will:

Meet the Panelists

Karrie Filios

Karrie Filios MA, LPC, CT is the Bereavement Services Manager for Agape Healthcare. She has worked in hospice and palliative care for over 16 years and has over 20 years of experience in grief counseling and family therapy. 

Karrie developed the bereavement services program at Agape Healthcare while also building a robust interdisciplinary internship program for those preparing to enter the field of grief counseling. She co-founded the Starfish Program, a grief support program for children in 2007 which provided support for children and families over for 13 years.

Karrie has been providing bereavement education and training to mental health professionals and community members since 2007.   She is currently an instructor for the University of Colorado Denver where she teaches on the topics of grief and loss, children’s grief, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. 

Additionally, Karrie serves as the Committee Chair for the Grief Networking Alliance. 

In 2014, Karrie became a Heartlight Center Honoree, which recognized her for outstanding service and commitment supporting grieving individuals and outreach to the community. In 2017, she was awarded the Hospice Caregiver Award and most recently in 2022, Karrie earned her Certification in Thanatology: Death, Dying and Bereavement from ADEC the Association for Death Education and Counseling.

    Nancy Saltzman

    Dr. Saltzman knew from an early age that she wanted to be a teacher so she attended Colorado College, received a Master’s Degree from the University of Colorado in Special Education, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of Denver. She was the recipient of the prestigious Milken Family Foundation Award for her work in education, was recognized as Colorado’s National Distinguished Principal, and was awarded the American Cancer Society’s Sword of Hope. 
    Following her successful 32-year career as a teacher and administrator she published her memoir, “Radical Survivor”. Using humor and an open, honest style of writing, Saltzman tells the story of how she survived cancer and the loss of her husband and two sons in a small plane crash. One reviewer wrote, “Saltzman’s story, told with honesty, insight, and laugh-out-loud flashes of humor, teaches us that it is possible to embrace life in the wake of tragedy. Let her show you the staying power of joy, strength, grace and love.”
    Saltzman presently lives in Colorado Springs with her husband, Greg Roman, and her two dogs, Teddy and Finn. She stays busy hiking in the foothills with friends and the dogs, volunteering in the community, and serving on the Leadership Team for the national organization of Soaring Spirits International, which meets the needs of widowed people worldwide.

    Paula Stephens

    Rev Paula Stephens is a renowned speaker, author, Zen Buddhist chaplain, and wellness coach with expertise in helping people navigate grief and trauma. With a Master’s degree in exercise physiology and graduate work in Buddhist Chaplaincy, she offers grief-informed training for health and wellness coaches at WellGrief.com.
    Paula’s personal experience with grief and advocacy work has made her a nationally recognized speaker on grief and wellness. She is also an ordained Zen Buddhist Chaplain and teaches a course in integrated resilience for active-duty military personnel. In her free time, Paula enjoys outdoor activities with her family in Colorado.

      John is the author of 4 books and has worked with clients on nearly 5k coaching sessions.
